Victorian (VIC) Roadworthy
Certificate (RWC) Explained

Victoria requires all vehicles which are being transferred or re-registered to obtain a valid Certificate of Roadworthiness this is to minimise the number of poor vehicles on the roads.  In some cases a Certificate of Roadworthiness (RWC) is needed to clear a vehicle defect or a notice of un-roadworthiness.

VIC Roads states that the seller of a registered car must sell the car with a Roadworthy Certificate (RWC).  You can sell the car without the license plate and registration by handing in the license plates to VIC Roads at any of the VIC Roads offices in Victoria.

Roadworthy Certificates, Certificates of Roadworthiness or RWC can only be issued by a Licensed Vehicle Testers (LVT) Mechanic City is a Licensed Vehicle Tester.  The Licensed Vehicle Tester needs to meet strict criteria to be able to give a vehicle a Roadworthy Certificate (RWC).  Licensed Vehicle Testers are tested, trained and randomly inspected by VIC Roads to verify that they are completing Roadworthy's ob cars in the proper manner.

A Roadworthy Certificate in lame mans terms means that your car is in a Roadworthy condition to be driven on public roads and highways.  That the car itself is safe and not a hazard to other vehicles, cars, buses and the general public.  Roadworthy’s are required by law to sell and transfer a registered vehicle and re-register and unregistered vehicle.

When testing a vehicle a Licensed Vehicle Tester in this case Mechanic City needs to test the following, Wheel & Tyres, Steering & Suspension, Brakes, Seat Belts, Lamps, Signals, Reflectors, Exhaust, Emission Controls, Windscreen, Windows, Wipers, Washers, Body, Chassis, Engine, Driveline and other items.  This will determine if your vehicle passes of fails the Roadworthy Test.  Generally most cars in good condition will need a minimal work done once again it depends on how well the car has been maintained and serviced.  The condition of the car will reflect the work that is required.

Many people have a perception of the infamous ‘Dodgy Roadworthy’ this is a danger to the general public, driver of the car and Licensed Vehicle Tester.  If you think you have been given a car with a Dodgy Roadworthy please bring it into Mechanic City before the Roadworthy expires and ask for another inspection if they car indeed has a ‘False RWC’ Mechanic City can advise you on avenues to rectify the problem immediately, this practice is what has given many legitimate mechanics a bad name.

A roadworthy is not a car inspection and does not validate the condition of you car what it does do is makes your vehicle the minimum legal standard to drive, transfer, register your vehicle for use on the public roads.  Mechanic City is offering with any RWC a complimentary basic car inspection and advice on the vehicle to every client new and longtime loyal.

Mechanic City offers a Victorian Roadworthy Inspection for $75 + GST.

Please call us on 03 9359 9026 to arrange a time to bring your vehicle to be tested.
